Potential Diseases Detected Via Breath Samples

He likened the concept to different radio stations broadcasting on separate radio frequencies.

The optical frequency comb was developed in the 1990s by Ye's JILA, NIST and CU-Boulder colleague John L. "Jan" Hall and Theodor W. Hänsch of Germany's Max-Planck Institute, who shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics with Roy J. Glauber for their work.

Ye's group has pioneered the application of frequency combs to spectroscopy, or the analysis of light emitted or absorbed by matter. The technique allows for many different gases to be detected all at once with high sensitivity through their interaction with light from such "combs," demonstrated by Thorpe, Ye and colleagues in the journal Science, in 2006.

To test the technology, Ye's team had several CU-Boulder volunteer students breathe into an optical cavity -- a space between two curved mirrors -- and then directed sets of ultrafast laser pulses into the cavity.

New, Wider Array Of Gluten-free Alternatives

Taking a positive approach to food makes a big difference, says Ahern, author of Gluten-Free Girl (Wiley, 2007) and creator of the popular blog glutenfreegirl.com.

"Instead of longing for the food I had as a child, I'm looking for foods that are naturally gluten-free."

Her culinary high points have included risotto with black truffles in Umbria during her Italian honeymoon. "It was better than any pasta," she says. She's learned to love red quinoa and makes sorghum bread she "adores."

"I still love carbs; I eat better carbs," Ahern says.

Ahern educated herself on nutritious alternatives to wheat. However, eating a healthy wheat-free diet may be challenging for many.

People with celiac disease are advised to omit wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut and triticale from their diets.

Police reveal our most wanted criminals

Police believe he assaulted 30-year-old Steven Hatch on December 2 last year in Commercial Street, Ogmore Vale, near Bridgend, causing serious head and facial injuries.

Humble, who has tattoos of a swallow on his upper left arm and a panther on his right leg, speaks with a southern English accent. He has connections in Rhondda, London and Farnborough, Hampshire.

According to Crimestoppers: "He can be extremely violent and members of the public are asked not to approach him."

Detectives have issued e-fits of two men wanted for questioning over the rape and abduction of a woman in Leckwith, Cardiff, on April 8 last year.

She was grabbed in Ocean Way, Tremorfa, at 1am and bundled into a large red saloon car before being driven to a lane at the back of Leckwith Green where she was attacked.

Cyc Yourself Up for A.I.

It is definitely a neat trick, but falls into the category of "smart" rather than "intelligent." The reading and generating of facial expressions, though, is definitely an A.I. problem, also well in hand in places such as MIT's Media Lab. (This technology has a lot of desktop potential as well--imagine a computer which could see and respond to expressions of tiredness or frustration.)

The collective value of all this should not be underestimated. It's a testament, really, to the amazing power and diversity of the human brain, which performs all of these functions continuously, with the input of little more than oxygen and sugar. But the human brain has an additional ingredient to tie it all together: cognition. Without that, these "intelligent" traits are simply inputs and outputs of a mechanistic judgment system that has more in common with insects than with human beings.

Archives for: February 2008

Elliot has rounded out the band and gives their sound this awesome, funky feel. And I guess the sunglasses are cool too, in that "I like to wear sunglasses indoors" kind of way. I'm usually not an advocate of the style, but it works because everything they do is in fun. I think CvC has established themselves as the party-band for all of Lincoln. At one point during their set, at least half of the venue was all-out dancing in the limited space in front of the Zoo's stage. It was awesome to see people getting so into local music...and I guess the $2 Empyrean Ales might have helped.

As if it wasn't obvious by my ramblings, I think the show went well. If you still haven't seen any of these bands, do yourself a favor and get out. Good people + good music = quite a deal for $5.

FTD a case study in flower power

A few days ago, on Valentine's Day, Mike Soenen's sweetly aromatic global empire sent a record 1 million bouquets to lucky females from Athens to Zanzibar.

But even sweeter than growing volume for his shareholders of FTD Group (NYSE:FTD) is the fact that his company never has to touch a petal, pot a plant, or ship anything to anywhere. The reason that FTD now generates EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation) of $96 million, a tidy 4.7 percent yield, free cash flow of $48 million, an unequaled 13 percent operating margin, and 13.6 percent return on equity is that Soenen's business model is pure branding and customer service.

What he's done is not build massive greenhouses and warehouses but assemble the world's most extensive network of retail florists --45,000 of them in 151 nations -- who are ready to deliver next day to anyone who orders from FTD online or by phone.

MOVIE REVIEW & LISTINGS

Be Kind Rewind Here is the synopsis, right from New Line cinema: Jerry (Jack Black) is a junkyard worker who attempts to sabotage a power plant he suspects of causing his headaches. But he inadvertently causes his brain to become magnetized, leading to the unintentional destruction of all the movies in his friend's (Mos Def) store. In order to keep the store's one loyal customer, an elderly lady with a tenuous grasp on reality, the pair re-create a long line of films including The Lion King, Rush Hour, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Back to the Future, Driving Miss Daisy, and Robocop , putting themselves and their townspeople into it. Directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Charlie Bartlett In this flick, which sounds like a Ferris Bueller for the current generation, Anton Yelchin stars as the titled character, a wealthy teen who sets up shop in the high school bathroom as his school's resident “psychiatrist," dishing out both advice and drugs.

Olbermann Accuses 'Fascist' Bush of Engaging in 'Terrorism'

The idea that even the most cynical and untrustworthy of the politicians in our history, George W. Bush, would use the literal form of terrorism against his own people was dangerous territory. It seemed to tempt fate, to heighten fear. We will not fear any longer. We will not fear the international terrorists, and we will thwart them. We will not fear the recognition of the manipulation of our yearning for safety. We will call it what it is: terrorism. We will not fear identifying the vulgar hypocrites in our government. We will name them. And we will not fear George W. Bush. Nor will we fear because George W. Bush wants us to fear.

Below is a complete transcript of Olbermann "Special Comment" from the February 14 Countdown show on MSNBC:

Now, as promised, a "Special Comment." A part of what I will say was said here first on January 31.

Obama takes message of unity on the road

Raising taxes often has the result of slowing growth. Growth is slow right now (many people insist we have already entered negative grwoth), and you think raising taxes is the solution?

Thank god you're not running. I'd suggest a return to pay-as-you-go, as it was when Clinton and Newt were in control. This would be have a much higher liklihood of success than raising taxes. Imagine "Look we know you don't have enough money to pay off your credit cards, but we are just gonna go ahead and take an extra 10-15% out of your paycheck every week."

If people are cash strapped, and they are, why lower their income by increasing taxes? .

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

If the school district took time to list holidays for other religious groups, and then "overlooked" the religious holiday that provides for the winter break, and is observed by the VAST MAJORITY of people in the district, state, country, I find their backpeddling very hard to believe. That aside, it really is trivial to argue over the day, but the politically correct panderers need to be called to the woodshed when their moronic attempts at extinguishing references to the religious aspect of December 25th are exposed for all to view/Seamus.

Yahoo's Wandering Eye Turning to AOL?

Up to a point, Microsoft will keep trying, said Eric Jackson, the dissident shareholder who was instrumental in forcing out Terry Semel as Yahoo CEO last year. "I think Microsoft's a company that's willing to play hardball and is also willing to walk away from the deal if they think the demands are unreasonable," Jackson added.

Downtown business owners lash out over canopy issue

I believe each owner should have the right to keep their own canopy or take down their canopy," Sherry Stacy, owner of Hidden Treasures said.
